Morning Devotion: Law

“The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple;”
Psalm 19:7 NKJV

Christians can sometimes have an adverse view of the law, they see it as opposed to grace, yet the God of the Old Testament is the very God of the New Testament. Jesus, the Word, became flesh and dwelt among us. Jesus is the Word of the New and Old Testament. Noah found grace in the eyes of God. Grace is a biblical concept that comes through Jesus Christ but it has been present from the beginning.

Law and legalism are not the same thing. Paul said in Romans 7:12 NKJV “Therefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good.” Scripture also says the law is a schoolmaster that leads us to Christ.

So what about the law after salvation? Does God get rid of it? The sacrificial system is fulfilled in Christ, so that is done away with but what about the Ten Commandments? We are not saved by keeping the commandments, but I don’t think God is doing away with them. Grace enables us to walk in them, to love God with all hearts, to not steal, commit adultery, covet and so on.

Psalm 1:1-2 NKJV “Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the Lord , And in His law he meditates day and night.”

As Christians we need to understand that the law cannot save us but we also don’t throw everything out the window when we are saved. We need to make the proper distinction between sacrificial and moral. Guard yourself from seeing the law of God in a negative sense and see it as holy, just and good. Let the love of God that has been shed abroad in your heart by the Holy Spirit cause you to walk in His commandments.
