Morning Devotion: Conviction

“Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: of sin, because they do not believe in Me; of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.”
John 16:7-11 NKJV

I thank God for the convicting power of the Holy Spirit. It is that conviction that convinces the sinner of their sin and shatters the belief that you are a good person. It is the same Holy Spirit that convicts of sin in the life of a Christian.

I think at times we conflate conviction and condemnation. Some even say condemnation makes you feel bad and God is not in the business of making you feel bad. If you’re in sin, you should feel bad and if you don’t have that conviction that you’re doing wrong that is pause for concern.

Conviction does bring about “a bad feeling” in you. The difference between conviction and condemnation is not the feeling because both will make you feel bad and have sorrow. The difference is that condemnation will drive you from God and conviction will draw you to Him.

Conviction is a blessing. As we walk this narrow path the enemies goal is to get us off track, it is the convicting power of the Holy Spirit that is our positioning system. If we start to get off track He will let us know. That’s when we repent and get back on the right track.

Ignore and cast down condemnation. Don’t listen to the lies of the enemy that say you cannot go to God because you messed up. On the flipside don’t be so arrogant that you don’t humble yourself in repentance before God under the conviction of the Holy Spirit over the sin in your life.
