Evening Devotion: Faith

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Hebrews 11:1 NKJV

I was reflecting on the subject of faith again the other day and the word substance was very prominent in my thinking. Faith is the substance… as I began thinking through the chapter it hit me, there faith was in the Messiah, they had faith that the Messiah was coming.

Later in the chapter it says, “these all died in faith”. We can tend to pull faith into the realm of needing things and that is part of faith but our main faith should be in Jesus, not for things. Can we have faith in the goodness of God while going through a trial.

Faith often times in the New Testament has the article the in front of it, meaning it is definite in referring to something specific- faith in Jesus.

Colossians 2:17 NKJV “So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ.” The substance is Christ.

Our faith is in Christ. Our hope is in Christ. Our eyes are fixed on Christ.

Hebrews 12:1-2 NKJV “Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

1 Corinthians 2:2 NKJV “For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.”
