Morning Devotion: Continue

“if indeed you continue in the faith, grounded and steadfast, and are not moved away from the hope of the gospel which you heard,….”
Colossians 1:23 NKJV

Colossians is a short but powerful book. It only takes a few minutes to read it through. In it Paul talks about the excellency of Christ. In the opening chapter Paul encourages the readers to continue in faith.

How do we continue in the faith? By being grounded and steadfast. That means staying in the Word. Walking according to it. Keeping our focus on Jesus.

Hebrews 12:2 NKJV “looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Paul also reminds them not to be moved off of the hope of the gospel. Paul wrote to the Galatians, who hath bewitched you. They had left the gospel and returned to Jewish myths. They left the simplicity of the gospel.

There are so many ways we can do that. Many times we can feel that we need to go beyond the gospel. Have you ever said, or heard it said, I want more of God? Now, I know what we mean but often times that leads down a wrong Word. I’ve heard people say, I read the Bible but I long for a word from God. At that point you know you have moved away from the hope of the gospel.

Continue in faith, remain grounded in Scripture and steadfast in hope. Keep Christ central to your daily walk with God. We never outgrow the gospel and we surely don’t need “something more” than the plain teaching of Scripture. Don’t be bewitched by the more of our day. Jesus isn’t calling you outside of His Word and you don’t need to pray in the courts of heaven and there is no secret revelation waiting for you in heaven, that is being moved away from the gospel.

Remain steadfast today and everyday. Read Colossians and Galatians and be reminded of the beauty of Christ and the power of the gospel.
