Know The Truth

John 14:6 NKJV “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.””

John 17:17 NKJV “Sanctify them by your truth. Your word is truth.”

In a day when truth is subjective, even in the church, we must personally turn back to our Bibles. Acts 17:11 NKJV “These were more fair-minded (noble) than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether things were so.” If the Berean’s checked out Paul’s teaching, why don’t we make sure the people we are listening to or reading are teaching the Scriptures accurately?

We live in a day where applying the Scripture or “living it out” is more important than understand its meaning, how can we live something out that we do not understand? We often hear things like doctrine divides, we just need to love Jesus. Which Jesus? The Jesus identified in Christian Scripture or the Jesus of pop culture who is about love and letting you do what you want? Which God do you serve? The Holy God of the Bible or the “god” of false love created by pop culture?

Jesus said that many would come to Him saying Lord, Lord but His response will be, depart from Me you workers of iniquity, I never knew you. Many leaders in the Church today are workers of iniquity, they, like satan in the garden of Eden say, hath God said? How could a loving God send someone to Hell? The sin of Sodom and Gamorah was inhospitable behavior not what the Bible clearly says, men being with men. We need social justice according to ethnicity. These few examples show the “hath God said” of our day.

It’s interesting how some Christians who don’t believe in original sin as defined biblically, do believe in the original sin of racism in anyone with white skin. It’s interesting those people who claim to believe in atonement don’t see forgiveness for a white person, they inherited guilt from the past that they can never atone for. In this system Jesus’s atonement on the cross doesn’t cover the original sin they have created in their own minds.

The only way we will be able to discern these lies coming into the Church under the guise of unity, loving your neighbor, and social justice is to know the truth of the Word of God. Notice how people talk about social justice and not biblical justice, how they talk about gospel “issues” but not the gospel as defined by the Scripture. The enemy of our souls has always twisted God’s Word, he did it in the garden, he did it with Jesus, and he is doing it with us now.

We cannot make God in our image and we cannot change the Scripture to fit our changed culture. The Word of God is true and it stands forever. Read Psalm 119 to understand the importance of the Scriptures.

We’re told to be loving, but not in a biblical sense. We’re told to be known by what we’re for and not what we’re against. Yet these things don’t originate with the Bible. Jesus warned of Hell, he spoke out against sin. The Apostles spoke out against sin. We are saved by grace through faith absolutely, but when you read Paul’s letters you see that we are to live holy and obedient lives. Grace is not a license to live how we want or to change the interpretation of God’s Word.

We don’t need a twenty first century lens or the lenses of a “minority group”. We need the lens of the Holy Spirit who teaches us the truth. Let me encourage you to know what the Bible says. Listen to a pastor who teaches verse by verse and tells you what the text says and not what it means to him. Get a good study Bible like the MacArthur Study Bible or the Reformation Study Bible to help you understand what the text is saying, only then can you apply it to your life.

Get Bible study guides that help you study the Scripture and don’t encourage you to find your own meaning or see yourself in the story. Put away the top selling books that give you three steps to a better life and get Puritan Paperbacks that will teach you the deep truths of God’s Word.

Take time and read through a doctrinal book; underline, highlight and take notes. Look up Scripture references and get to know what the Bible teaches. There are so many references in the New Testament to Christians walking away from the truth and going after false teachers who tell them what they want to hear. If what your pastor or favorite author is saying is the same narrative as the media but with a few verses sprinkled in, that’s a sign you are not hearing truth. Be grounded in The Word of God, hold fast to it and do not bend to fables and philosophies that change the truth of God’s Word.

Be encouraged today, the more time you spend studying the Bible, the more firm you will be as the onslaught of false teaching increases in days ahead. Be wise to the schemes of the enemy. Test everything by Scripture and reject false teaching, no matter how “Christian” it may seem.
